Happy June, anglers!
This might just be our favorite time of year in Montana. The rivers and creeks are wide open, the bugs are active, and the fish are looking up! We’re still seeing snow in the high country, which means cooler water temps and a steady, gradual runoff—ideal conditions for walk-and-wade adventures.
🌊 Current Conditions
Snowpack: 91% of normal
Flows: On the drop, improving daily
Water Clarity: Good throughout the drainage
Weather: Mix of warm and cold has kept runoff manageable
🐜 Salmonfly Season Is On!
The Salmonfly hatch is in full swing up and down the river. Fish are absolutely keyed in on large dry patterns, but as the hatch progresses and the trout get picky, downsizing your flies and experimenting with darker or off-color variations can really turn the bite back on.
Top dry patterns to try:
Chubby Chernobyls (black, tan, purple)
Water Walkers
Fluttering Stones
Brindlechutes for a natural finish
🪱 Dropper Rigs & Nymphing
When the surface action slows, don’t hesitate to drop below. We’ve been finding good success on:
Pink and red worms
Stonefly nymphs (Rubberlegs, Double Beads)
Small Baetis and caddis imitations
Target softer water and inside seams—especially as flows continue to drop.
⚠️ Safety Reminder
Rock Creek can still get western this time of year. Keep an eye out for:
Downed trees and debris
Fluctuating water levels
Other recreationists—it's a shared resource
Always check the flows and forecast before heading out. Respect the resource, fellow anglers, and the wildlife that calls this place home.
🎣 Tight lines, stay safe, and enjoy the magic of June on Rock Creek!
